Artist Statement:
This is a stamp pane designed for American postal office to vary their stamp themes. With more and more Chinese people immigrated to America in these past decades, Chinese culture becomes more and more familiar to Americans nowadays. The four illustrations are the four things that Chinese New Year, Spring Festival, cannot miss. Red was widely applied in this stamp pane because it represents luck in Chinese culture. Ruling Script is the typeface for "Spring Festival" because its strokes with corners and strength can convey a sense of Chinese calligraphy. If this stamp pane were put into the market, more Americans could receive a friendly welcome from Chinese culture.
Project Produce Process:
First, I did a research about how much percent that Chinese immigrants take up in America nowadays. Then, I decided to make a stamp pane about the most well-known Chinese festival — Spring Festival. Next, I drew illustrations for the four icons of Spring Festival. Later, I arranged text around it, and wrote an explanation next to the stamps. After arranging the positions of illustrations and text, I chose typefaces for this pane, and adjusted details like font sizes, weights and spaces to have hierarchy. In the end, I applied colors on the text to make emphasis on the hierarchy.
